Sri Lanka is considered as one of the few countrie Sri Lanka is considered as one of the few countries with a vast and rich ethnic diversity. The culture itself is unique and forms the Sri Lankan identity that includes customs, traditions and rituals which were handed down from generation to generation.

Sinhalese being the island’s major ethnic group that constitute more than 70% of the population, has an origin of Indo-Aryan civilization. Northern parts of the island are highly populated by Tamils with the Dravidian culture having migrated from South India. Sri Lankan culture was also highly influenced by the colonization of European civilizations, Portuguese, Dutch, and British respectively from 16th century. Their descendants form the Eurasian ethnic group called ‘Burghers’. Muslims or Sri Lankan ‘Moors’ are of diverse origins with some tracing their ancestry to Arab traders who first settled in Sri Lanka around the 9th century and intermarried with local women.

The Sri Lankan way of life is very simple and filled with humbleness and happiness. This is one of the reasons why the Sri Lankans have a very great sense in appreciating the simple things in life such as arts and nature.

There is almost nothing you cannot find in the ‘ There is almost nothing you cannot find in the ‘The Pettah Market’ which is in the heart of Colombo City. It is also the largest and most famous market in Sri Lanka. Not only a fresh produce market, Pettah Market is a collection of street blocks lined up with stalls of a wide range of goods right from electronics to fashion accessories, jewelries, street food at surprisingly low prices. During regular day hours, it becomes one of the busiest places in Sri Lanka. If you are visiting for the first time without a map in your hand, you might probably feel like you are in a maze. It is also a great place where you could put your negotiating skills to test.

Introducing the largest living creature in the wor Introducing the largest living creature in the world, the Blue Whale. Once abundant in nearly all the oceans on Earth until the end of the 19th century. The present global blue whale population is estimated to be 10,000–25,000. Sri Lanka happens to have one of the largest colonies of Blue Whales in the world.

Sadly, one of the major threats that these giants are still facing globally is being struck by ships, which can cause severe injuries and death. These incidents happen throughout the world's oceans but particularly in areas where shipping and whales are concentrated. Sri Lanka is renowned for its blue whales, but their habitat lies within one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

Join Susannah Calderan, world renowned marine mammal ecologist and Honorary Research fellow at the Scottish Association for Marine Science on the 10th of December from 18h00 (GMT 05:30) onwards via zoom for an exclusive online lecture on resolving the blue whale ship strike problem.

The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) is The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) is the largest mammalian predator in Sri Lanka. There is an approximate population of 750-1000 leopards wandering the island. Over the last century, the numbers of these elusive species have drastically decreased. During colonial times, this was initially because of game hunting and later through poaching for skin.

“The Leopard Project” is a research conducted by The Wilderness & Wildlife conservation Trust (WWCT) in Sri Lanka in the hope of conserving the Sri Lankan leopard in its natural habitat. By studying the fundamental aspects of leopard ecology – including range use, diet and sociability - and behaviour, this research is attempting to fill the void that existed in this regard in Sri Lanka.

A major threat that often works hand in hand with the increased leopard-human interactions resulting from habitat loss, is poaching. Together with various interested parties in Sri Lanka, they are attempting to both document poaching within the country as well as attempt to understand the source of demand for leopard products locally, regionally and internationally.

Raja Atha. The Esala perehara (sacred procession Raja Atha.

The Esala perehara (sacred procession in Kandy) is thought to date back to the 3rd century BC and was the ritual enacted to invoke the blessings of the gods for rain, fertility, successful crops and good health. Once key feature of this procession would be the parading of the tooth relics of Buddha in a golden casket on top of a Tusker. Raja was on such tusker chosen for the task. He was one of the most celebrated elephants in Asia during his lifetime and was world famous for his noble behavior.
After serving Buddhist processions for about 50 years, Raja died in July 1988 due to an illness and his death prompted the government to order a day of national mourning in Sri Lanka. On August 20, 1986 former Sri Lankan President J. R. Jayewardene declared Raja the tusker as a national treasure, in recognition of his valuable services to the religion and culture of Sri Lanka.
